Founder Spotlight: About Staffing’s Sharlene Massie

With more than 30 years at the helm of Calgary-based staffing agency About Staffing, CEO and founder Sharlene Massie discovered the importance of community and culture in finding the perfect candidate for a position.

“I had $500 in my overdraft, I was living in a hotel, and I was raising my three young boys,” Sharlene began. However, when a few connections got in touch hoping for help in their respective hiring processes, the foundations of About Staffing began to take shape.

“It was very scary, but I thought, you know what? If all these people believe in me, I should be believing in myself,” she continued.

Finding her friends find temporary assignments developed into a team of two part-time staff, which snowballed into a team of go-getters with a passion for meeting the ever-evolving needs of employers.

On the topic, Sharlene elaborated: “We are masters at matching culture, even in today's world where it's all processed and systemized and tracked, it's still a person behind the resume.

“Every individual person has a different need and a desire and a dream and a family and a situation, and so, being able to trace all of those stories and make those matches with more than just ‘I am looking for a job,’” she added.

Today, About Staffing has braved recessions, floods, a global pandemic to place more than 63,000 people in meaningful work, supporting more than 100,000 families along the way. It’s Sharlene’s uncompromising passion for people which she credits to About Staffing’s success to date.

“We understand what our clients need before they even realise it. That insight sets us apart. It allows us to adapt, to grow, to lead, no matter what the circumstances are,” Sharlene concluded.
